Circumcision

What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin, which is the fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of the penis. It is commonly performed in newborns for cultural, religious, or personal reasons, but it can also be done later in life for medical purposes. In adults or adolescents, circumcision may be recommended to treat conditions like phimosis (tight foreskin that can’t be retracted), recurrent infections, hygiene issues, or discomfort during intercourse. The procedure is relatively simple and usually performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the age and health of the patient. Recovery is typically quick, and circumcision can improve hygiene, reduce the risk of certain infections, and relieve symptoms caused by foreskin-related problems.

Why Do People Consider Circumcision?

  • 1. Cosmetic Reasons:

  • To achieve a cleaner, more uniform appearance of the penis

  • To align with cultural, religious, or personal preferences for a circumcised look

  • To improve self-esteem or sexual confidence, especially in adult males who choose the procedure for aesthetic reasons

  • 2. Functional Reasons:

  • To treat phimosis, where the foreskin is too tight to retract

  • To manage recurrent infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or urinary tract infections

  • To improve personal hygiene, as it becomes easier to clean the head of the penis without the foreskin

  • To reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and HPV

  • To resolve issues with pain or discomfort during sexual activity or erections

  • To address paraphimosis, a medical emergency where retracted foreskin gets stuck and restricts blood flow

Dr Vicky Jain Approach to Circumcision

Dr. Vicky Jain’s approach to circumcision is focused on precision, patient comfort, and safe, hygienic outcomes. Whether performed for medical, personal, or cultural reasons, Dr. Jain ensures the procedure is handled with sensitivity and professionalism at every stage. He begins with a thorough consultation to understand the patient’s concerns—such as phimosis, recurrent infections, or hygiene difficulties and explains the process clearly to help patients make informed decisions. The surgery is typically performed using modern, minimally invasive techniques under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's age and comfort. Dr. Jain prioritizes a smooth recovery, minimal discomfort, and a clean, aesthetic result. With attention to both medical need and cosmetic detail, his circumcision procedures are safe, discreet, and tailored to each individual’s needs.

What is the suitable age group for Circumcision?

Circumcision can be performed at any age, but the ideal timing often depends on the reason for the procedure. Newborn circumcision is commonly done within the first few weeks of life for cultural, religious, or preventive health reasons, as healing is faster and the procedure is simpler at this stage. However, circumcision is also safely performed in older children, adolescents, and adults, particularly when done for medical reasons such as phimosis, recurrent infections, or hygiene concerns. In older age groups, healing takes a bit longer and may involve more post-operative care, but the procedure remains effective and routine. The key is that the patient (or guardian, in the case of minors) is fully informed, and the decision is based on clear medical or personal considerations.

How long does recovery take for Circumcision?

Recovery after circumcision typically takes about 7 to 10 days for infants, while older children, teens, and adults may take 2 to 3 weeks to fully heal. In the first few days, mild pain, swelling, and sensitivity are common, but these symptoms usually improve with prescribed medication and proper care. Stitches (if used) are often dissolvable and do not require removal. Most patients can resume light activities within a few days, but it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise, sexual activity, or activities that cause friction in the area for at least 3 to 4 weeks, especially in adult cases. Good hygiene, gentle cleaning, and following all post-operative instructions are essential for a smooth and infection-free recovery.

Tests Requirements

Before circumcision, a few basic medical tests may be recommended to ensure the procedure can be done safely especially for adolescents and adults. These typically include blood tests to check hemoglobin levels, blood sugar, and clotting ability, which are important for safe healing. A urine test may be done to rule out any active infections. Standard viral screening such as tests for HIV, HBsAg (Hepatitis B), and HCV (Hepatitis C) s also commonly performed. For adult males or those with a known medical history, an ECG (electrocardiogram) may be required to assess heart health before anesthesia. These tests help the surgical team minimize risks and plan the procedure with complete safety in mind. In infants, testing is usually minimal unless there are underlying health concerns.
