Hair Transplant

What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves hair follicles from one part of the body (usually the back or sides of the scalp, where hair is more resistant to balding) to areas with thinning or no hair, like the front or top of the scalp. It’s commonly used to treat male and female pattern baldness. There are two main techniques: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), where a strip of scalp is removed and divided into grafts, and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), where individual hair follicles are taken directly from the donor area. The goal is to restore natural-looking hair growth in balding or thinning areas.

What's the difference between the FUT and FUE technique?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) involves removing individual hair follicles from the donor area and transplanting them to the thinning or balding spots. This method leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are often hard to notice, even with short haircuts. Recovery is quicker, typically within 3–5 days, making it suitable for those with active lifestyles.FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), on the other hand, involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area, from which individual follicular units are dissected and transplanted. This technique leaves a linear scar, which can be hidden with longer hair. The recovery period is longer, usually around 10–14 days.

Why Do People Consider treatment for Hair Transplant?

  • To achieve thicker, fuller hair in balding or thinning areas

  • To correct patchy hair loss due to scarring, injury, or previous surgery

  • 2. Psychological & Social Reasons:

  • To boost self-confidence and self-esteem

  • To feel more comfortable in social and professional settings

  • To reduce anxiety or self-consciousness related to hair loss

Dr Vicky Jain Approach to Hair Transplant

Dr. Jain begins every hair transplant journey with a comprehensive consultation, taking the time to understand your personal story and the reasons behind your decision to seek treatment. He places strong emphasis on the emotional and social impact of hair loss, recognizing its importance in your overall well-being.

As part of his 360-degree approach, Dr. Jain will explore various contributing factors such as stress, family history, lifestyle habits, smoking, and any underlying medical conditions. Since hair loss can result from a range of causes including genetics, hormonal imbalances, medical disorders, and nutritional deficiencies he may also recommend specific blood tests. These tests help evaluate hormone levels, thyroid function, and essential vitamin and mineral balances to accurately pinpoint the underlying cause.

This thorough evaluation enables Dr. Jain to develop a tailored treatment plan, ensuring that the grafts are placed in an optimal environment for long-term survival and natural growth.

What is the suitable age group for Hair Transplant?

The suitable age group for a hair transplant is typically individuals aged 25 years and above. This is because hair loss patterns become more stable by this age, making it easier to predict future hair thinning and plan a successful transplant. While some younger patients may qualify, surgeons usually recommend waiting until the hair loss has progressed to a more consistent stage to ensure long-lasting, natural-looking results.

Is Hair Transplant painful?

A hair transplant is typically not painful, especially with the use of local anesthesia and proper post-operative care. Most discomfort is mild and short-lived.

How long does recovery take for Hair Transplant?

Recovery after a hair transplant typically takes about 7 to 10 days for the scalp to heal from the procedure. Most people can return to work within a few days, although there may be some redness, scabbing, or swelling during the first week. The newly transplanted hair usually starts shedding within 2–4 weeks (which is normal), and visible hair regrowth begins around 3 to 4 months, with full results seen in 8 to 12 months.

Tests Requirements

Before undergoing a hair transplant, a few medical tests are usually recommended to ensure the procedure is safe and effective. These include a complete blood count to check general health, blood sugar levels to ensure proper healing (especially for diabetic patients), and screening for infections like HIV, Hepatitis B, and C. A coagulation profile is done to rule out any bleeding risks. Additionally, the doctor may assess the scalp using trichoscopy to evaluate hair density and the condition of the donor area. In some cases, an allergy test may be performed to check for reactions to anesthesia or medications. These evaluations help ensure a smooth and successful transplant experience.
