Hypospadias is a clinical condition that affects the penis. There are three common presentations of hypospadias:

  • The site of the opening through which a boy urinates (urethral meatus) is located at a lower than usual position.
  • A bend to the penis, typically a downward curve of the penis or forward tilt of the head of the penis.
  • An incompletely formed foreskin.

Surgery to fix hypospadias involves rebuilding the urethra so that it extends into the head of the penis as well as straightening any curvature of the penis. If hypospadias repair surgery is indicated, we typically advise repair between 6 and 18 months of age. This is a time period during which boys are less aware of and less involved in their genitalia, which leads to an easier recovery.
